Racing Pictures

I was introduced to racing by my wife and it has been a most rewarding experience. I wish I had found out about it when I was younger but then again, I'm not sure I could have kept up with the pace at which the racing crowd lead their lives even then.

Phantom House Stables
This picture was painted after meeting the owner of the yard, William Jarvis, when racing in Cologne. Over the two days it took I had Flownaway, a colt of some talent breathing down my neck and generally acting the fool behind me. I grew very fond of him and enjoyed following his races. The colt with his head poking out of the stalls is Demi Beau
Beckhamton Stables
Beckhamton is a famous yard and there is a real sense of history when you see the boards giving the lists for first, second and third lots and the open fires for drying tack. Roger Charlton trains a great number of well known horses from here including several for the Queen.
I hope to go back and paint some more scenes there in the near future.
Julycoursegrandstand
I painted this view of the July Grandstand when we were staying in Newmarket, the headquaters of British racing. We go there for a week's holiday once a year and it is a good opportunity to look at the horses and watch them work on the heath, surely one of the most beautiful sights there is. Work starts at about 5.30 am in the summer. The parties have only just come to an end a couple of hours ealier.
The July course is one of two racecourses there and is, as the name implies where the racing takes place at the height of summer. There are plans to tear down the back of these beautiful stands.
